Under Construction Update

Under Construction Update 2009

The form and detail of several of our projects that are under construction in 2009 can now be ascertained as superstructure is completed and cladding and finishes begin to be installed. We have compiled a rough and ready photographic essay to describe how they are shaping up.

500 Bourke Street Development, Melbourne

Our new insertion into the 500 Bourke Street tower foyer and its adjoining north facing retail precinct is very nearly complete. The arrival experience for the building’s commercial tenants is framed by a dramatic glass canopy on Bourke Street and a tessellated folded plaster ceiling. The integrated lights within the sculpted ceiling tiles have been switched on and the expansive fritted glass panels are being fixed in position.

Within the retail precinct, folded steel skylights punctuate the public space, and a roof terrace overlooks the dome of the nearby courts building. We have been working closely with MoVida who will be opening a new restaurant that opens onto this terrace, in the near future.

Sydney City Redevelopment for Westfield

Excavation into Sydney’s sandstone foundations is complete and the substantial retail podium is about to be rebuilt anew. Our design creates a new urban identity for this four level shopping centre in the heart of Sydney, refurbishes an existing eleven storey office building that sits below Centrepoint tower and provides a new commercial tower of 30,000sqm alongside.

Reconfiguration of the existing office building is well advanced and the new atria that slice through the floorplates are now clearly visible, the new form discernible and a new high performance curtain wall  installed. The new tower comprises 28 floors of an elliptical floorplate set above an elevated sky lobby. We are working with Westfield Design and Construction on this project.

The Exercise Science and Sports Precinct and Learning Commons for Victoria University

A new university building set into the hillside along the northern edge of campus for Victoria University has its superstructure in place. This project will be a new portal to the campus, whilst reinforcing its edge and encircling a new learning commons as a centre for teaching, discussion, reflection and debate. Pristine white precast concrete panels have been installed, with their openings and patterning that allude to the observation and testing of athletic performance that will take place within the building.

Community Hall, Bruny Island, Tasmania

On Bruny Island, reached by ferry and located just south of Hobart, a new Community Hall is being built to our design. The timber form frames a gathering place for the small local community and embraces an idyllic view of the water beyond. Construction has been undertaken by people living on the island, many of whom are generously donating their time and effort.

Queenscliff Residence

Timber cladding is steadily encasing the framing for a new house on the water’s edge in Queenscliff. This residence investigates the idea of a telescopic view through different layers of indoor and outdoor space towards the heads of Port Phillip Bay. Timber graining is layered across overlapping skins and embossed onto a finely textured concrete wall poured in place.
