Steel plate is folded to create shelter, perforated to allow visibility and separated to conceal lighting. The central space is flanked by two folded steel canopies that imply a grander hall akin to a nineteenth century station interior, with their arched openings and extruded character. Their intense blue colour separates the structures from the road surface making them appear to float and shimmer, a dynamic backdrop to the theatre of arrival and departure. The structural members are tree-like – a reference to the agrarian landscape and bushland setting that pre-dates urban development in Melbourne’s south-east.
Clayton Transport Interchange
This transport interchange is part of the realisation of the Clayton campus masterplan in providing world-class infrastructure. Located on Wellington Road at the southern fringe of Monash University Clayton campus, it is the main portal for accessing the campus and is, for many people, the front door to the University.
It represents a significant upgrade in capacity and a valuable addition to the Public Transport Victoria (PTV) bus network. It is intended for the Clayton Bus Interchange to integrate with a future rail station to form a public transport hub.
The layout of the interchange distributes 21 bus bays into 3 rows that are sheltered by custom-designed canopy structures. A restrained palette of steel and glass cladding provides shelter from sun, rain and wind while maintaining visibility and permeability.
